Start
The early mana pool buys more spell rotations without delaying Tear.

POPULAR LEAGUE CLASSIC PLAYSTYLE
Stack mana early, then turn every defensive stat into one more spell rotation. This is the deliberate, close-range Ryze that wins by sequencing—not by fishing for one miracle cast.
Start Sapphire Crystal, rush Tear, then build Rod of Ages into Archangel's Staff. Frozen Heart is the default physical-defense third item; Banshee's Veil answers magic burst and hard engage.
QUICK BUILD
PURCHASE ORDER
The early mana pool buys more spell rotations without delaying Tear.
Start Mana Charge early; take Catalyst first only when lane survival is the real bottleneck.
Health, mana, cooldowns, and armor all extend the number of rotations Ryze can complete.
Choose defense when one control spell ends your fight; choose penetration when targets survive full rotations.
WHY IT WORKS
Overload, Rune Prison, and Spell Flux all gain value from maximum mana, so the resource you need to cast also increases damage.
Arcane Mastery reduces other cooldowns on every cast. Durability is therefore offensive: staying alive long enough for the next Q-W-E cycle is the win condition.
RUNES & MASTERIES
Max Q, then W, then E; take R whenever available.
Short trade: W → Q → E → Q, then leave before the return trade. Extended fight: activate R before the grouped rotation and keep alternating Q with available utility spells.
Testing baseline: 9/0/21 for mana, cooldown reduction, movement, and utility. Shift points into defense when the matchup can force early all-ins.
GAME PLAN
Last-hit patiently and protect mana. Use targeted W only when it secures damage, a gank, or a safe disengage.
Stand close enough that Spell Flux can matter, but do not empty the bar for chip damage. One clean rooted rotation is better than three isolated Q casts.
Tear starts the clock; Catalyst stabilizes lane; completed Rod plus Archangel gives the first true sustained-fight window.
Move with a frontline or through controlled vision. Ryze is strongest when enemies must enter his short range instead of when he must chase.
Hit the safest available target, keep Rune Prison for divers or a confirmed catch, and use R before the fight is already decided.
COMMON MISTAKES
FAQ
Usually yes when the lane is volatile because Rod starts its time-based growth and gives health. Finish Archangel first only when Tear is already advanced and immediate spell power matters more.
Skip or delay it when the enemy's meaningful damage is mostly magic and attack-speed reduction has little value; Banshee's Veil is the cleaner defensive pivot.
